Notes | "North Eastern Ensign" Jan 10th 1908 The festive period which has just passed brought sadness along with it to many. Among those who had reason to mourn locally were Mr & Mrs Thos. Skelton, for on Monday, the 30th of December they received a telegram to the effect that during the same day their second eldest son, William aged about 24 years was killed by a fall from Minilya Boy which horse he was riding in a hurdle race near Perth in Western Australia. The nature of the injury being fracture of the skull. The deceased one of the best hurdle race riders in Victoria was a native of Benalla where he was most popular for his integrity as a jockey. After his mishap he was conveyed (he being still alive) from the scene of the accident by special train to Perth city where he lingered till his death, and where his remains were interred. All his sporting friends attending his funeral and providing a costly leaden casket for his interment. In Victoria, too, the deceased was honoured by marks of reverence at Euroa at New Years Day races, the whole of the jockeys there wore crepe on their arms out of respect for him, and at Benalla the spirited and popular bookmaker (Mr P Burke) called upon Mr & Mrs Skelton and displayed that true class of sympathy and magnanimity to be found only in minded natures by offering to defray, unconditionally, the cost of hereafter bringing the remains of the deceased jockey to Victoria for re-interement in Benalla. Otherwise much sympathy has been shown for the deceased’s parents and their family over the sadness of their bereavement, especially as the race in which the ill-fated jockey was killed was the last he intended riding in the West, it being his intention to leave that State at such a time as would enable him to join his people in Benalla by New Years Day. |
